"Protecting the public and serving our member boards by promoting excellence in chiropractic regulation."

Fall 2001

Communication Publication for Regulatory Boards

President's Message - A time of rebuilding

As each of us reassesses our family and professional priorities in light of the horrific events of September 11, we tend to draw closer to those aspects which bring light and hope to our lives.

The friends we have made in chiropractic and our focus on "a family in regulation" provided a powerful beacon for our recent regional district meetings, where attendance at each of the three venues exceeded previous years.

While the FCLB board of directors had some initial concerns about continuing with the scheduled meetings, the support of our members clearly overrode travel and emotional obstacles. There was some tangible healing in continuing to claim authority over the part of our world we can control-protecting the public through the best in chiropractic regulation. And there was-and is-comfort in friendship.

I feel fortunate to have been able to participate at two of our three venues - Maine and Missouri - where vigorous and frank dialogue and creativity were clearly at the forefront of all discussions.

On our shared table are issues such as bylaws revisions, licensure responsibilities involving convicted felons, consent orders, veterinary chiropractic, model reference documents including ethics for board members, practice acts, and applications for licensure, just to name a few.

Our report on expanding Federation services centered primarily on additional 24x7 on-line database and information options, while we continue our commitment to "real live caring people" to support our members in problem solving.

It is refreshing and healthy that we can engage in spirited conversations, with divergent opinions being raised about numerous ideas for our future. When I became president, I voiced my commitment to continuing to grow the FCLB as an organization which is inclusive rather than exclusive, and responsive to the needs and requests of our members. As we near the halfway point of this first year together, I am even more deeply dedicated to this goal.

In the coming weeks, the Federation board and staff will be planning our midyear meeting. The service team meets in person just twice a year - in January and in conjunction with the annual conference. This winter meeting presents a terrific opportunity for your elected representatives to continue the discussions from the regional district meetings and to plan the activities and services for the coming year.

In preparation for that meeting, your board and I would greatly appreciate any additional input and information you might care to share to assist and further our discussions. In particular, we plan to address bylaws amendments and how we might best present alternatives to facilitate streamlined conversation and voting at next year's annual meeting.

Thank you again for allowing me the privilege of serving as your president. I am always available to discuss any matter with you, and look forward to seeing you in person at our May 1 - 5, 2002 meeting in Chicago, one of the world's most intriguing and spirited cities.

We continue to gather strength and courage from those who walk the path of public protection; let us reach out our hands in friendship to those who need us most at this time of rebuilding a free society.

Sincerely,
Wayne C. Wolfson, D.C.
FCLB President
