Brothers and sisters in chiropractic regulation aid New York
The volunteer chiropractors came from New York, New Jersey, neighboring states, and some as far as Kansas. As the need for assistance to the exhausted workers became apparent to doctors, a team emerged as "Hands Helping-Helping Hands" treating thousands of patients at Ground Zero. Dr. Robert DeBonis, Vice-Chair of the New York State Board for Chiropractic, was key in coordinating assistance at Ground Zero. He stated, "This has been a very moving and sacred experience, which answers to the Highest Authority…those treated love and appreciate us being there, and this will allow chiropractic to shine in a whole new light." Drs. Margaret Verhagen and Joanne Amicola-Olgee, NY Board Members, were among the many serving graveyard shifts to offer chiropractic care. The New York Statutes allowed licensees from other jurisdictions to provide emergency services under the encompassing scope covering other health professions. Chiropractic licenses, photo identification, and times of availability were collected from out-of-state volunteers helping at Ground Zero. Norman Cohen, Executive Director of the NY Board shared, "As many, I am devastated by the breadth of destruction, but also I am inspired by the greater breadth of the response from caring, free people who are resolved to make the zenith rise from the ashes of this barbaric act and assure that our perpetual forces of good will shine a light on every shadow of evil whenever it attempts to surface." Chiropractors walked away from the rubble remembering the very reason they became healers. |
