Minnesota Board develops proactive orientation program

The Minnesota Board of Chiropractic Examiners noticed there was an increase in complaints from the public about their doctors.

The board strategized for nine years previously about getting out of the "testing business" but as the state tests stopped, the human contact with their licensees had also dropped. The board wanted to get back into contact with licensees and to be seen as a helpful resource rather than a bureaucracy.

Executive director, Dr. Larry Spicer, and the board came up with a seminar for new practitioners.

The three-hour seminar includes a historical segment about the regulatory board and also explains the relationship between the board and the chiropractic colleges and professional associations.

Dr. Spicer reviews the disciplinary process with the attendees and highlights areas of potential trouble for DCs.

All board members attend the session and serve as mentors and leaders for the sessions. The group is broken into teams to facilitate discussion about different disciplinary issues, allowing interaction and education on the process of regulatory law.

Dr. Spicer's educational technique introduces information via questions and builds a foundation for the group to brainstorm, ultimately reviewing the intricacies of the disciplinary matter.

Following the round table discussions, attendees return to an open forum and assign a spokesperson to explain how their team resolved the case.

The board and attendees both receive motivation and reward-new doctors receive three hours of continuing education credit at no charge.

The Minnesota Board has time to interact with new licensees and to develop a mentorship among its members.

Dr. Spicer added, "We have facilitated two programs thus far and the benefits enable us to be proactive and ultimately to decrease the potential for doctors to walk down the wrong path...our complaints will continue to go down."
