"Protecting the public and serving our member boards by promoting excellence in chiropractic regulation."

Fall 2001

Communication Publication for Regulatory Boards

From the Editor - as we carry on after September 11th

The events of the last two months have affected our country as well as our family of chiropractic regulation and healthcare credentialing groups. One of our CIN-BAD subscribing healthcare organizations, Empire Healthchoice of New York, previously located on the 20th floor at World Trade Center Tower One-were able to get many of their employees out before the tower crumbled. Laura Dean, the Credentialing Department Supervisor, indicated that their company lost a total of nine employees located in different departments. The FCLB extends our deepest condolences to Empire Healthchoice and the many others affected personally by the tragedy.

When I heard Laura's voice on our answering machine, I immediately felt relief but sadness for the many lives affected. It made me realize the life lines that we take for granted and how our bustling lifestyles sometimes keep us from needed human contact. The stories we share now and in the future will heal and unify us.

Special insight into the regulatory implications of this tragedy came from FCLB legal counsel Dale Atkinson, who also advises the Association of Social Work Boards. In their recent newsletter, he commented, "...From the perspective of regulation, the public relies on you as regulatory boards to protect the health and welfare of society as a whole. The recent tragedies have caused me to re-examine the importance to society of a legislatively adopted regulatory scheme.

"As someone who has dedicated my professional career to serving the interests of the public by representing and advocating associations like ASWB in the development and implementation of programs to better protect the public, I consider my added realization of the importance of regulation as eye-opening. September 11, 2001 has added another dimension to my perspective and further underscores the importance of regulatory schemes in general.

"Regulatory boards and board members must be affected in a way that makes them realize their vast responsibilities. Regulatory boards will not be the end-all for addressing terrorist behavior, but your job as regulators of the profession to better protect the public are that much more evident and important. Step back and reevaluate!"
