STATEMENT
OF THE WEST VIRGINIA BOARD OF CHIROPRACTIC
REGARDING LIFE
UNIVERSITY COLLEGE OF CHIROPRACTIC ACCREDITATION
October 30, 2002
Current Status of LUCC
Accreditation:
On
October 20, 2002, the Council on Chiropractic Education (CCE) conducted a
hearing before the CCE Appeal Panel regarding the Life University College of
Chiropractic (LUCC) appeal of the CCE Commission on Accreditation (COA) decision
not to reaffirm the accreditation of LUCC.
Representatives of LUCC and the COA participated in the hearing.
The CCE Appeal panel has announced its ruling in the matter, and has
upheld the decision of the COA. This
ruling means that, as of October 20, 2002, LUCC has no form of accredited status
with CCE.
Pertinent
Laws and Rules:
West
Virginia Code 30-16-6(b)(5) -
requires each applicant to show that he/she is:
A holder of the degree of
doctor of chiropractic from and a graduate of a chiropractic college or school
located in the United States, its territories or possessions which was approved
by the council on chiropractic education or its successor at the time the degree
was conferred or that the applicant is the holder of a degree of doctor of
chiropractic from college of a foreign country that the board determines is
acceptable as set forth in section eight.
Position
of the West Virginia Board of Chiropractic:
Although
Life University College of Chiropractic has notified the Board that they have
begun the process of re-applying for accreditation, CCE no longer gives any
accredited status to institutions who are “actively seeking” accreditation.
The position of the Council on Chiropractic Education that “LUCC has
no form of accredited status with CCE” precludes the West Virginia Board
of Chiropractic from approving applications for licensure in West Virginia from
holders of LUCC degrees or graduates of LUCC whose degree was conferred or whose
graduation date is after October 20, 2002, until such time that Life University
College of Chiropractic regains accredited status with CCE.
Continuing
Education (C.E.):
After
October 20, 2002, any CE programs solely sponsored by LUCC are not eligible for
Continuing Education credits with the West Virginia Board of Chiropractic. See Board Rule 4-1-5.1.c.1. for specific
information pertaining to the CE provider requirements.
Statement
Regarding Previous Graduates of LUCC:
The
Board wants to assure the public that all Life University College of
Chiropractic graduates currently licensed in West Virginia have passed rigorous
national and/or state board examinations and have been found to meet minimal
competency requirements for chiropractic practice.
Additionally, all chiropractors licensed in this state must complete a
minimum of 18 hours of additional continuing education training each year.
