Dr. Gatterman is a graduate of Western States Chiropractic College and holds master's degrees from the University of Iowa and University of Toronto. She practiced in Portland Oregon for 13 years prior to returning to chiropractic education and research. She participated in the first Oregon Practice and Utilization Guidelines published in 1991, and the chapters relating to Contraindications published in both the Mercy Guidelines and Canadian Chiropractic Practice Guidelines. She contributed a chapter to Vear's book on Chiropractic Standards of Practice and Quality Care titled: Standards for Contraindications to Spinal Manipulative Therapy.

Her related research has emphasized both consensus process and evidence based care. Previous studies that led to the current process include development of chiropractic nomenclature through consensus, and her masters work at the University of Toronto that identified the patient centered paradigm associated with chiropractic practice. She is currently acting as a process consultant to the Oregon Board of Chiropractic Examiners developing the patient-centered, and evidence based guidelines. Dr. Gatterman is the editor of two widely used chiropractic textbooks: Chiropractic Management of Spine Related Disorder, and Foundations of Chiropractic: Subluxation.
