FCLB AWARDS CROWN ANNUAL CONFERENCE

Citing a lifetime of contributions to protecting the public, the Federation of Chiropractic Licensing Boards presented its highest honor, the George W. Arvidson Award, to Edwin P. Devereaux, chiropractor from New South Wales, Australia.

Distinguished by a professional career that has included teaching, accreditation work in chiropractic education, legislative development, and regulatory innovation, Devereaux has been recognized and honored at every level in his native country. In 1983 he was awarded his nation's highest honor, personally bestowed by Her Majesty the Queen: The Order of Australia.

In presenting the award to Devereaux, FCLB Vice President Dr. David E. Brown noted, "It is his integrity, self-sacrifice, and his exceptional ability to inspire in others the courage to change and grow, that are hallmarks of his leadership."

Now in its 7th year, the award recognizes individual sacrifice and contribution to chiropractic regulation. Past recipients have included Drs. Peter D. Ferguson, Daniel Saint-Germain, co-winners Frank G. Hideg, Jr. and Paul M. Tullio, D. Brent Owens, Rex Wright, and initial recipient Donald M. Petersen, Jr.

The award for Outstanding Chiropractic Regulatory Board was presented to the Ohio State Board of Chiropractic.

In serving as a model to other boards, they have courageously revamped their public service to material stakeholders including licensees, consumers, staff, board members, professional associations, other government agencies, and the educational community.

New legislative proposals include defining the doctor/patient privilege, providing a limited license for travel-to-treat, increasing the penalty for unlicensed practice to a felony, adopting Part IV of the NBCE exams, and expanding the range of sanctions available to the board.

The Ohio board has developed a strategic plan, which is re-evaluated annually during a facilitated board retreat, and is a full partner in the chiropractic regulatory community as well as the interprofessional arena within Ohio and nationally.

Other awards included Special Presidential Recognition for retiring regulatory board members Drs. Richard Plummer (SC) and Earl Barbour (NC).
